I definitely needs some coffee this morning. I could probably take a nap...but I don't think it's socially accepted yet to nap at work.
But when it becomes the norm, I will change my blog to Napping At Work.
Yes, driving to work in Boston. Just one man's daily report from the world of morning commuting...

I was going to complain about daylight savings time throwing off my body clock, but I am managing ok. Some years, I would be dead tired the next day...Right now, I feel like it's a normal Monday. I do think "they" should just choose a time frame and use it all year round. If Standard time will only used for 4.5 months, is it really the standard anymore?
The bus was empty. I guess most peeps got a late start today.
Somebody spilled some liquid (let's just say it was coffee) on a T seat. Riders were good and were warning people at every stop...since the spill was covered by a Metro newspaper.

The T was fine today. There was a little boy who got on at Downtown Crossing and was crying until he and his mom got off at New England Medical Center... I felt bad for him. Hospitals aren't fun.
I will be visiting a client for the next two days so no posts until Monday.
Have fun.

Two bus coming down the line at the same time...at least I got on the emptier bus this morning.
I think I may change the "Level of passenger rudeness" bullet to "Level of commuting annoyance". I think the peeps who ride the T during my hours are seasoned veterans and know how to ride together.
An annoyance level? Well now, that varies from day to day to day to day.

The ol' MBTA was having a hard time getting back into the swing of the work week. My bus was late and it was just late enough to start interfering with the next bus' time frame. My bus is supposed to pick me up at 6:57. The next bus that come down the line stops at 7:05 (although according to mbta.com, it should be 7:02...so my bus was late..the next one was almost on time).
So, wha' happened? You have two buses driving down the street at the same time, which is weird, confusing, and redundant. I got on the first bus, because I thought that's what I should do although I knew the second one would have been less crowded. I stood up and I wish more people would follow the "stand as far back in the bus as you can" rule. When the bus is way crowded, the people getting on need as much room as they can get.
I got to the T stop and it was packed with people. The first train came at 7:22. I passed and waited for the next one (I was in the minority...most people got on that first one). Another one showed up at 7:25 and I was happy that the rest of the ride was comfortable...aside from the heavy smoker that sat beside me.
Well, I guess he was a heavy smoker...unless he is rolling around in tobacco at home?

I walked out of my house today without the aid of an umbrella. The only working umbrellas we had were these huge monstrosities that could keep a nice Irish family of 12 dry. All our compact umbrellas were thrown out in the Great Umbrella Purge of 2006 since they were broken. So, I put on my trusty hat...and prayed that the bus would be on time (not early or late) since I was leaving the house at the last possible second so I didn't have to stay out in the rain longer than I had to.
I got to the stop and had to wait for a minute...got a little wet but nothing to cry over. I got on the bus, many of the seats were wet. I guess someone had a window open overnight. Bleck.
Once I got on the T, things were normal until these group of people who seemingly knew each other stepped on the train and were having a very loud discussion about the phone conversation they had with each other last night. Suddenly, it wasn't 7:22 AM...it was 11:55 PM. I don't think it was rude for them to be talking as loud as they were...(maybe some of the vulgarities were) but it was out of character for that time of day. They certainly had everyone's attention on the train.
Later on the train, some woman pushed her way into the car exclaiming, "People just don't want to step into the train." There were people standing in front of the doorway, making it hard for her to get on. Beyond them, there was plenty of standing room in the interior of the train. I love lectures in T etiquette.
One stop later, she was able to take a seat. At the next stop, she offer her seat to an older gentleman who refused it. He commented, "Now I know I am old."
She practices what she preaches.
Take care.

The gentleman who was announcing the stations on the Orange Line this morning was really enthusiastic. For example: he was fired up to explain to the riders that Sullivan Square would be the next stop.
He did make a mistake and said you could make a connection to the Green Line at New England Medical Center...but corrected himself quickly with a laugh...
"I meant Silver Line..."

Light snow hits Boston! Time for an exciting commute!
My bus arrived on time so I didn't have to stand in the snow all that long. I was the only person at my stop, which is not normal. I guess too many people stay up for the Oscars last night.
The bus ride was a little slow, but that was to be expected. When I got to the T station, the train was pulling in. I ran up the stairs and boarded. I was unable to get a seat, but no matter. I stood for the duration and I was able to peep out the window to see all the rusting scrap metal underneath the lower deck of 93.
When we got to Downtown Crossing, we paused for a longer than usual time. You could sense something was wrong. As I looked towards the middle of the car, I could see a crowd forming a circle around someone or something on the train's floor. The intercom started to squawk: "Yes, we have that. Someone is on the way." I decided to move forward to see what was happening.
From what I could tell, a woman fainted. She was lying on her back and her feet were raised...she had them resting on the seats across from her. MBTA personel came running...over one of their radios, I heard someone saying something about telling the passengers to use the Green Line because we would be not moving anytime soon.
I felt bad for the woman, but I didn't stick around to see what the outcome would be. I looked down the tracks and I could see that the next Orange Line train was stopped at State.
I walked down the underground passageway to Park St. and picked out an outbound trolley to Copley. It's been a while since I have used the Green Line...just as quirky as always. I was able to see the old Arlington mosiac sign as we passed through it's namesake station. This is what it looks like:

I took my car and drove to on of the parking garages near the T stop. We have a babysitter tonight and we are going out with friends. Maybe see a movie? WOW! Ah, the joys of parenthood. I wanted to have the freedom to be able to jump off the T and then drive to the meeting place without depending on the bus to be on time. Hopefully, the T will cooperate.
This morning, I had to scrape the snow off my car, which wasn't too bad...but I am out of practice.
The T was a little busy for a Friday. At Downtown Crossing, there was some pushing and shoving to get on the train before the doors closed.
It did not lead to fisticuffs, so the day was given a low rudeness score.

Let me sum it up:
The bus was right on time. Heck, I almost missed it...it was so on time. This week is going to be great for riding the bus since school kids have the week off for February vacation. Many kids do ride the MBTA bus to school...and since they are on vacation..the bus will be pretty empty.
When I got to the T station, there was a big mass of people. I heard over the intercom that there were delays. Then I heard there was a shuttle bus service to Wellington. So, I got on the shuttle bus...but not before people were shouting question to the T official trying to coordinate riders onto the shuttle bus.
When I got to Wellington, I paid for the T again. I should get refunded, right?
Meh. The T ride was fine....so that worked out for me. Tomorrow should be a better day...maybe I just jinxed myself.

So, I finally figured out a few things to keep track of. Check it out. I am particularly tickled that the "Feared for my life" line item made it over to this new phase of the blog.
I missed my regular bus today. It came on time, surprise surprise. I heard it as I was walking out of my house. With my driveway still pretty icy, I decided not to run for it and that standing out in the cold was safer than slipping and breaking my skull.
I was pleasantly surprised surprised to see the 7:12 bus coming 'round the bend 5 minutes early. Sweeeeeeeeet A.
Once I got on the bus, everything was smooth. I think many people took today off to extend the 3 day weekend...for those of us who are lucky to have a 3 day weekend.
I saw a guy on the T eating a turkey sandwich on old school Wonder Bread with lots of mayo. He was chomping away at it for most of the trip...definitely a 30 chew before swallowing kind of person. I could see his jaw moving in the corner of my eye. It was quite remarkable.
Level of rudeness was low today, due to light crowds. I actually saw someone offer their seat to an older woman. She declined though...but that act of kindness lowered the score.
Let's celebrate the Presidents this weekend. Type to you Tuesday.

You'd Think It Never Snowed Here
My title is based on my experience yesterday with everyone from the media to the everyday person on the street talking about the snow as if it was going to change everything. Yes,this winter it really hasn't snowed...but come on...this kinda stuff happens here.
If that's one thing about public transportation, it is dependable through the harshest of weather. Sure, we had some minor delays...but nothing out of the ordinary. I remember taking the commuter rail to work through the ol' blizzard of '78. (yeah, I made that up)
Sidebar: I am picking my car up from the auto body shop. Finally, the remnants of the accident are gone.

Honeymoon is Over
I think the T gave me one good week. My first week back on the T, everything was on time and the people I rode along with were pleasant. Well, last week is over. Now it gets real.
Was it the coldest day of the year today or what? I think I noticed it more today because I had to wait for both the bus and subway for longer than normal. The wind was constant too...which didn't help much. My ears are getting their sensitivity back.
I think I may be on to something. I could time the duration of both the bus and T trips...and report them here.
Nobody was rude on the way into work today...but I met a woman yesterday who wasn't so friendly towards me on the way home...but I can't discuss it here due to contractual obligations.

Slight Delay
Ok, so I guess I have been lucky...and I guess I have become jaded...but today was the first time the T was a little late, which made for a crowded ride.
Ya I know...big deal. This happens everyday. Just not to me...Wah.
Anyway, the tight quarters made for friendly chats between stops. Some older woman got pushed aside when some dude was trying to get off the train. She commented to me, "I guess that guy was in a hurry." I smiled. A woman next to her spoke of experiences she has had in the past with rude passengers 'throwing elbows' to get a seat.
Both of the ladies were gone by the next stop. These types of moments don't happen in the isolation of a car when driving to work.

First Week Done
So, I finished a week of 'commuting to work' (I leave the driving to the MBTA). I still don't have any regular landmarks or items to keep track of yet. It'll take time.
Some thoughts:
There is a 7-11 that the bus passed and it has a big sign advertising a new Energy Coffee. Does anyone need more of a pick-me-up from their coffee?
Since I am on the subject of coffee, I wanted to mention I have been drinking a lot of it this week. With it, I have had some coffee-driven ideas:
If word of mouth marketing is the most effective kind of marketing, then why doesn't traditional marketing incorporate a word of mouth feel?
The slogan I would use for my product would be: "We Think It's Pretty Good." or maybe "Dude, this is so great. You have to try it."
I should cut down on the coffee.

Auto Body Work
I am finally getting the dents that my car sustained in October fixed up. My insurance company gave me a check a long time ago, but the holidays, a job transition, and my fear about not having a car at all times delayed my action.
I was able to drive it to the auto body shop and since it was so close to the T station, I just walked over and hopped on the train that was pulling in as I stepped onto the platform.
I got in a little later than usual, but with no issues.
Man, is it going to get warmer (you know, like above freezing) soon or what?

Wash Your Hands
One thing that I have to keep reminding myself is to wash my hands after riding the T. I'm not a germ-a-phobe, but when I worked downtown back in the day ('01-'02) and took buses and Ts...I got sick during the winter three times.
3 awful times.
As long as remember to wash my hands when I get into the building, I will be fine.
I sat on the Orange line and faced east today. It's not as interesting as looking west, but I did see parts of the Hood Plant I have never seen before...plus the Scraffts building stood tall on the horizon.

The Efficiency of the German Train System
Day two and my experience with the T has been favorable. My bus has been on time both days, although a little more crowded than yesterday. (I am thinking Super Bowl Sunday had something to do with the lack of peeps on the 7 o'clock bus...drinking and eating a lot at night tends to limit the number of early risers...we shall see next week...it may just be a Monday thing.)
Since there were more people on the bus, my trip took a little longer...which meant my arrival at the subway stop was a little later... No problem, it just meant I spent less time waiting for the train.
My total trip time was 43 minutes. Pretty sweet.
P.S. I am sad to see that the Assembly Square movie theater has closed. (see comments from yesterday's post). Back in the day, we used that marquee as an insight into how bad the traffic was on Route 93. If you saw traffic was backed up to the Loews' sign, you knew you were in for a looooooooooong battle to get into Boston.

Transportation of the People
Here it is: The first post of the new phase of the blog. After doing significant research on mbra.com, I was able to plot my new trip through Google Maps technology. I plugged in my starting point and end point and it brought back my route on a map along with transfer times and duration. Pretty sweet. This site has come a long way, baby.
The bus ride was ok. You really know you are with the people on the bus. Far away are my days of being part of the elite: single-occupancy car driving. This morning, I was sitting real close with friends and family of all walks of life...all bundled up.
Once I got on the Orange Line, I took another sear facing west where I saw many of the roads that were a part of my normal route plus, Winter Hill in Somerville, and the movie marquee for the Assembly Square Loews (which was blank...did it close?).
I got to the new job in plenty of time. I even got some coffee before I went in.
So, I will work on figuring out what the structure of each post will be. For the time being, enjoy these free-form posts. Thanks for following along.

The End?
Departure Time: 7:18
Arrival Time: 8:01
Weather as I call it: Where's the snow? Just cloudy and cold today.
Paper Guy: Doing well.
Shady Gas Price: $2.07
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
All the weather reports that I saw last night were calling for a snowy commute today...so I was surprised to see clear skies and roads. It would have been a better send off for this phase of the blog if the roadways were a little treacherous...but no dice. Some gray skies and cold temps are common this time of year. Nothing special to report in
I bought a paper from Paper Guy today. I flashed my dollar bill and he hustled over to me. I rolled down my window and he greeted me with some nice words...I didn't catch exactly what he said but his tone was soothing.
I handed him the money and I said, "Keep it. Keep it."
He said, "Oh, thank you!" and held the bill up in the air.
I smiled and rolled my window back up. I wish I had had the time to say 'great job' or 'thanks for everything' but the traffic has to keep moving..and the world has to keep turning. I wish him the best.
And so it goes. And so it goes.
Next week I will be posting my adventures on the MBTA. Good-bye and Hello.

At a red light, I turned to look at a woman who was stopped beside me. I turned my head before I saw all the details, but I think she was popping a zit with the help of her vanity mirror.

The Final Countdown
Departure Time: 7:10
Arrival Time: 7:52
Weather as I call it: Cloudy when I started. Sunny when I got there.
Paper Guy: Very much bundled up
Shady Gas Price: $2.09
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
First off: I saw a guy behind me shaving while driving. No, not with the traditional implements (a large blade and soap applied with a brush)...he had an electric razor. I wonder, is he really saving a lot of time by shaving on the way to work?
Secondly, this post title is not just a bad song from the band Europe...but it is apropos of the next 3 blog posts.
Yes, faithful readers...I will be changing jobs starting on February 5th. The new job is in Boston's Back Bay...and I have decided that driving there (more like parking there) is not economical. So, I will be using public transportation starting next week.
How this affects the blog will be determined next week, but it's current state cannot carry on...so the countdown is on. Wednesday is my last day.
Please take note that I will continue posting here...We'll all know (including me)what it is next week.

C'mon, this is a part of living in Boston. Frigid temps? No problem. We're built tough. The way people were whining about it on the local news program, you'd think this type of weather never occurred in this area before.
Buck up. Feel alive. I walked to work today wearing a windbreaker. No big deal.
Ok, I lied. I got into my car at 7:02 and after a long pause, a few gurgles, and a moan...my engine started. I went back in the house and let it warm up.
Outside of some dude in a van not waiting his turn to take a left at an intersection, a tow truck with a disabled vehicle going super slow in the left lane on Route 28 in Somerville, and peeps from CT not knowing which lane they wanted to be in on Storrow, it was a superb communte.
Oh yeah, and it was cold too...Hooray!

It's Just Gonna Get Colder
Departure Time: 7:05
Arrival Time: 7:46
Weather as I call it: Partly cloudy again. Cold
Paper Guy: Walking backwards on his median.
Shady Gas Price: $2.11
Yelled at other drivers: No, but I communicated using a nonverbal method
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
Just when I was thinking I have had it easy lately driving to work, I got beeped at today. It was partially my fault, but the dude who beeped was driving a little faster than he should have.
Right around the Harvard Square exit off of Soldier's Field Road heading west (same location of my accident), I heard a 'toot' behind me from a blue Honda Civic.
I guess I had faded into his lane..and he was trying to pass me on the right...
So, I moved over and flipped him off as he passed me... I don't know if he saw what I did, but it felt good.

Paper Guy: Hat and a scarf wrapped around his head
Shady Gas Price: $2.13
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No

I got up early today for a few different reasons. 1) I have been a little behind at work. Getting here around 7:30 is great for my productivity. 2) My son woke up at 1AM and wanted nothing else but to play. We played for an hour...and when 2 o'clock rolled around I put him back in his crib and said, "Ok, time for everyone to go back to sleep." at my wife's insistence. He cried for a while...but eventually he understood that it was in fact time to go back to sleep...and did.
Unfortunately, Dad didn't sleep that much between 2 and 6...so he got up and started his day early.
It's a good thing that Wednesday is "coffee day" for me. Sunday is a coffee day. All other days, no coffee. Yes, I schedule my coffee intake.

Paper Guy: Snow gear: Scarf and hat
Shady Gas Price: $2.13
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: Nien
------------------------------
I had to brush off my car before heading to work, which added exactly one minute to my commute. I got in my car and started it at 7:07...but I didn't leave until 7:08. A half inch or so of light snow doesn't take that long to wipe off the car including my car hood, roof, and trunk. I did have to scrape the windshield since there was some ice on it.
I let the rear window defroster take care of the rear window...because it lives for this kind of stuff.

So, a little snow was falling this morning. Not too much to slow anyone down, although the beacon on the old Hancock tower was blinking red...which means "snow instead".
I saw Paper Guy stumble a bit on his median. I guess there was just enough snow to make it slippery. Maybe I should revise my previous statement about the effects of the snow on peeps since Paper Guy did have some trouble. He didn't fall down though...he went about his business like nothing happened.

Nah.
Have a fun weekend. Watch out for me Monday.

I feel 80 percent better than I did yesterday. Don't ask me how I quantified my physical health....it's a long, complicated process.
Peeps on the TV were blabbing and blabbing about the cold temperatures, but I was underwhelmed when I walked out to my car this morning. Yes, I had a sense that there was a stillness to the world as if everything was frozen solid and couldn't move...and the car hestitated a bit before starting...but it was certainly tolerable.
This is what winter is supposed to be like.

Yeah, I don't feel well. I started to feel crappy on Friday and then it got worse as the days wore on this weekend culminating with a lethargic and chill-ridden MLK day. I only get sick twice a year (on average), and when I do get sick...it's pretty bad.
I think I am getting over it. The fluids have been flowing since 6:45 and I have cleaned off my steering wheel, radio, gear shift, lights switch, and window wiper controls. I refuse to take any OTC drugs to relieve my symptoms because I hate the side effects like drowsiness...which isn't good for driving to work.

Two vans boxed me in on Storrow. The guy in front of me kept braking and braking. Pretty annoying...but it reminds me of this scene:
Ian: You could fold this though.

Ian: Not the bread, you could fold the meat.
Nigel: Yeah, but then it, then it breaks up, breaks apart like this.
Ian: No, no, no, you put it on the bread like this, you see
Nigel: But then, if you keep folding it, it keeps breaking...
Ian: Why do you keep folding it?
Nigel: And then you...everyhing has to be folded, and then it's this,
and I don't want this I want large bread so that I can put
this...
Ian: Right
Nigel: ...so then it's like this, this does not work because
then...it's all....
Ian: 'cause it hangs out like that?
Nigel: Look...
Ian: Yeah.
Nigel: Would you been holding this?
Ian: No, I don't want to eat...I wouldn't want to put that in my mouth, no
you're right, Nigel, you're right...
Look at the duration of the trip. I think I might have ran a red light to get to work that fast.
Happy Friday. I am off Monday, so check back then...

Paper Guy: Wearing some snazzy running pants...two stripes on the sides. Pretty good for protecting against winter winds.
Shady Gas Price: $2.23

Two vans boxed me in on Storrow. The guy in front of me kept braking and braking. Pretty annoying...but it reminds me of this scene:
Ian: You could fold this though.
Nigel: Well, no then it's half the size.
Ian: Not the bread, you could fold the meat.
Nigel: Yeah, but then it, then it breaks up, breaks apart like this.
Ian: No, no, no, you put it on the bread like this, you see
Nigel: But then, if you keep folding it, it keeps breaking...

Don't you just hate it when your car heater never really gets hot enough? Maybe it's just my problem with the Altima, but some days even when the heat in my car is cranking...it just doesn't seem hot enough.
I didn't miss winter...still don't.

There was this mom-type person tailgating me through town on the first ten minutes of my drive. I tried to stop her by tapping on my brakes a few times, but there was no end to her reign of terror until she was able to pass me at an intersection where the road split into two lanes (one to turn left and one to turn right).
After she passed me, she ran the red light to turn right...even though it was clearly marked as a "No Turn On Right" intersection.
Maybe Moms should slow down too?

Paper guy made a sale today. His 'client' gave him a dollar bill for the sale...which is probably double what the newspaper's sale price is... From my perspective, Paper Guy made himself a little extra money on that transaction as a tip.
I swear I saw him take the dollar bill, wave it over his head in jubilation, and then slip in into his pouch with a huge grin on his face.
Maybe I am making things up...

Although it's not as dark as long as it is in Iceland, I did have to tell myself a few times this morning that I was driving in the 7AM hour, not the 7PM hour.
It was dark...and peeps weren't driving with their headlights on. Not a huge deal, but it was hard to them until they were right next to you.

Body Worlds - Sold Out!
Departure Time: 7:12
Arrival Time: 7:56
Weather as I call it: A few clouds...mild again today.
Paper Guy: NO HAT!
Shady Gas Price: $2.29
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
Paper Guy did not wear his winter hat today and from looking at his hair as I drove by him, it appeared that he had taken it off while he was standing on the median. His hair had tell tale signs of "hathead".
The Museum of Science has power, my friends. They have commandeered one of those big construction-grade traffic signs (you know the ones: big orange monstrosities that flash messages through the use of multiple glowing amber bulbs) to display their own warning to the general public.
Instead of a message that you would normally see on this type of sign (Example: Right Lane Closed - Merge Left), they want to let you know that "Body Worlds Sold Out - Reserved Tickets Only".
So, I have two questions:
1. How do I get me one of those?
2. How fast can put the message "Slow Down - Your Mom Is Worried About You" on it?

There was a woman on Storrow Drive that wouldn't get out of the way for an emergency vehicle. An ambulance came right up behind her but she didn't budge...even though she had plenty of room to merge right.
The ambulance had its lights flashing and beeped at her a few times but to no avail.
I yelled, "What's wrong with this person?" Sometimes I wonder aloud.

I tried to get my duration down under 30 minutes today...but my attempt was foiled by some strange traffic pile up at Kenmore Square. It was strange because it cleared up as fast as it appeared....it may have been due to some bad merge.
Funny stuff from the user stats: I have received a few visitors from search engines on the query of "Let Earth Receive Her King". How 'bout choo?
I am currently working on the Shady Gas Price chart with all-time data. Although it isn't finished, there is a pretty clear trend.

When I drove by Paper Guy, I think we had a moment...ish. Since there were very few cars on the road this morning, I approached him at a pretty steady clip. I turned to look at him while I was passing. He looked up and I think we made eye contact although it was hard to tell because he was wearing his shades.
I felt a twinge of sadness as I left him standing there. He doesn't make many sales on days like these...or so I assume. Don't fret Paper Guy! Come January 2nd the traffic will be back.
I tried to get my duration under 30 minutes...missed it by 3 minutes. I hit one too many stop lights.
I saw an old guy walking two dalmations along the Charles today. Here's a cute dog picture:

Quiet Monday morning. I got into a little race with a young woman in a silver Civic. She passed me once on the McGrath HWY (The seagull is gone, btw)...I came up behind her and passed her while I crawled up to a red light.
As I passed her, I looked over...and although we didn't make eye contact...we both knew...it was on.
At the next light, she deftly maneuvered and got way ahead of the line of cars.
By the time we got on to Storrow Drive, I conceded.

Weather as I call it: Sunny and cold
Paper Guy: Shades Scarf Hat
Shady Gas Price: $2.23
Yelled at other drivers: Yeah
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
On Storrow Drive heading westbound, there is a split...a crossroads if you will...where everybody has to make a decision.
Either stay to the left and head into Kenmore Square or stay to the right and keep on trucking west.
This morning, a woman in a minivan (I hate vans) paused while traveling in one of the right lanes...probably to contemplate and reflect on her choice.
As fate would have it, I was in that same lane....and I almost hit her...because two of her three brake lights were out.
I passed her on the left and I looked in to see who was having these deep thoughts.
Alas, alack...a woman on her cell phone.
"But I still love technology...always and forever..."

There is a dead seagull on the McGrath HWY. It lying close to the barrier on the left hand side of the inbound lanes. This is the second time I have seen it this week. It may have been hit by a vehicle, but the carcass is pretty intact so I doubt this cause of death.
Maybe I should contact the DPW to give it a proper burial?

Slow going today...slow but steady. No one did anything annoying, which is half the battle.
I saw a guy with a "Save Our Center/Stop Home Depot" bumper sticker. I let him cut into my lane.
I thought we had to "Save the Cheerleader" to save the world?

There were multiple emergency vehicles in front of the retirement home in town this morning. They didn't block or slow down traffic, but I hate seeing that....and so it goes.
There was this Lexus SUV with a huge red bow on its front grill...apparently to spread joy around and to the world and beyond and goodwill towards man and all that.
So, I did find it a bit unusual when, as I was stopped alongside the Lexus at a red light, the driver decided he had enough with said red light and proceeded to run right through it.
I did find it even more unusual when I found him tailgating me 5 minutes later, red bow and all. How did that happen?
See you on the roads Monday.

Yelled at other drivers: ...yeah

At a major intersection in town, not one but two peeps cut in front of me to take left turns (from their perspective).
As I was coming towards the intersection, I could see a silver Corolla and a small SUV waiting to turn at the green light. There is no green arrow on this traffic signal, so they had to yield.
I guess they were sick of yielding because as I got closer, both cars decided to creep slowly but steadily to the middle of the road...effectively forcing me to stop.
At first it was like a game of chicken, no one was stopping....but I came to the realization that I do not need to get into another accident.
So, I stopped, beeped my horn, raised my hands in disgust, and shouted, "What the Efff?!?"
The female passenger in the Corolla changed her expression as if to say "Sorry.....I do not know what I am doing with this madman behind the wheel...but he treats me ok for the most part and my family likes him...and I just can't take Brad back."
(Yes, all that in one expression)
The driver in the SUV made no eye contact. Good move.

Paper Guy: Brown hat, McDs windbreaker
Shady Gas Price: $2.14
Yelled at other drivers: No

------------------------------
Lots of volume in Wellington Square. I am not sure what the cause of it was. I swear sometimes the lights are off slightly some days. If the duration of a green light is shortened by two seconds, it makes a big difference. It means less people can speed up through the yellow light and even less people can run the red light.
The other factor may be the large number of trucks that roll through the area.

Drenched in Dignity
Departure Time: 7:07
Arrival Time: 7:50

Paper Guy: Got tricked by a guy in a pickup. More details below.
Shady Gas Price: $2.14
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
Phew. Shake out those cobwebs!
The morning started with a whimper. It looked like I had a flat tire, but after a closer inspection it was just a little low. I will have to pump it up a bit.
Then, I turned the key and the engine was slow to turn over. I hadn't driven my car in 4 days. I guess it was as groggy as me this morning.
Paper Guy thought he was going to have a sale, but it turned out to be a "fake out" instead. This pickup truck made a quick move to get into the left lane near Paper Guy's median. Paper Guy lifted a newspaper over his head with a knowing smile, but then quickly retracted his arm and stuck the paper back into his sack. He realized that the pickup truck was only driving erratically, and not interested in a purchase.
For some, this incident would cause embarrassment. For Paper Guy, every move he makes is drenched in dignity.

I have to stop watching the morning news before I leave the house. The traffic guy on the screen told me that Soldier's Field Road was closed at N. Harvard St.
So, I took Memorial Drive instead (the calmer, more social sister of Storrow Drive) to avoid what I thought would be a major headache.
When I looked across the river, cars were motoring as fast as normal. I think they lied to me (and only me).
Wellup, I am off all next week for Thanksgiving and such. Have a good one. Let's give thanks for blogs, driving, cars, and the avoidance of phantom traffic.
I may post stuff during the week anyway...just cuz.

I Need a Fog Horn
Departure Time: 7:07
Arrival Time: 7:53
Weather as I call it: FOGGY. 50s.
Paper Guy: Hat, no shades (I think...it was foggy). He did wave to someone behind me.
Shady Gas Price: $2.09
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
Yeah, foggy conditions out there. There was about a 1/4 mile of visibility on the roads...so no leaf peepin' today.
I saw an Audi in Somerville with their driver's side back door opening and closing as we drove through the intersection where the McGrath Highway meets Medford St. As I passed the car, I looked to see the driver pretty distraught. I was going to roll my window down and ask something like, "Hey, do you know your door is open?"...but I think he was quite aware.
You don't want to be the person who points out the most obvious item. It's only a good time when you know you will get a response like the ones I remember from Mad Magazine:
Q: "Hey, do you know your door is open?"
A1: "No, I didn't notice that...but I did notice how nosy people are in this town."
Q: "Hey, do you know your door is open?"
A2: "No, but your mouth is open...shut it!"
Q: "Hey, do you know your door is open?"
A3: "Actually, yes I did know that. I was trying to see if I could go faster with it open. The thing is, I can't complete my experiment because I keep getting slowed down by idiots like you!"

Lots of police officers pulling over people today. It must have been "Speedy Wednesday". I missed the memo.

Hey, I'm back...ev'rybod.
Good news on the insurance-who-is-going-to-pay-for-my-rear-bumper-dealy. I was a pest yesterday and called my insurance company...again and again. This time, I had my claim number...which I am sure helped the process. The woman who was handling my claim called me back and told me a check would arrive in 3 to 5 business days to pay for the damage.
Nice.
Also, it was determined that I was not at fault and a surcharge would not be levied onto my policy.
Sweet A.
Rainy drive today, but people were cool for the most part. I take it particularly slow on Storrow Drive/Soldier's Field Road. No need to get into another incident.

Since Veterans' Day is tomorrow, many people had the day off today. The drive was spectacular.
A few notes:
The Wendy's in Medford is no longer hiring smiling cashiers. They took the message down from their sign. Are they now hiring smirking ones?
The liquor store in E. Cambridge is using their sign to thank Question 1 "No" voters. I guess I can't take part in this mass appreciation.
The accident I was in 3 weeks ago is still lingering in the back of my mind. Mostly because I haven't received money from my insurance company yet. I called the person handling my claim on Wednesday and had to leave a message. I think I may need to be pesky to get this going.
I am taking Monday off...so see you Tuesday on the roads.

Hey, I will be out tomorrow on a random vacation day because I gotta take them or I'll lose them...type to you Friday.

There was an old man driving a late model Buick with Florida plates on the Monsignor O'Brien Highway this morning. He decided to hit the brakes at the green light in front of the Discount Liquors store in East Cambridge. He forced me to slow down to a stop while the light turned yellow to red. As we were waiting for the light to turn green, he threw his cigarette butt out his window.
When the light turned green, the older gentleman made an illegal left. He may have been turning into the liquor store...I'm not sure because I didn't stick around.

Easy ride for the most part. Slow at times, but I was distracted enough by my satellite radio that it didn't matter much. I was constantly scanning through most of my 100,000 channels to find forgotten gems like The Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard It in a Love Song".
Seriously, does anybody need to hear that tune again? Then again, it's satellite radio and there is something for everybody...and even though I can't believe that anyone would want to hear that song, I stayed on to listen to the whole thing (Well, almost...once I got to the flute solo, I had to bail). There must have been some nostalgia working its magic...bringing back memories of listening to AM radio in the back seat of my mom's Chevy Malibu and getting car sick.
I swear that's why I instantly feel nauseous whenever I hear Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle."
Saw peeps in Leverett Circle waving and holding signs to vote "Yes" on Ballot Question 3 this Tuesday. Their frantic waving and infectious smiles may have swayed me.
"Heard it in a loooooooooove song!"
Arrival Time: 8:09
Weather as I call it: Sunny and cold...10 degrees below average.
Paper Guy: Dressed appropriately.
Shady Gas Price: $2.06

Easy ride for the most part. Slow at times, but I was distracted enough by my satellite radio that it didn't matter much. I was constantly scanning through most of my 100,000 channels to find forgotten gems like The Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard It in a Love Song".
Seriously, does anybody need to hear that tune again? Then again, it's satellite radio and there is something for everybody...and even though I can't believe that anyone would want to hear that song, I stayed on to listen to the whole thing (Well, almost...once I got to the flute solo, I had to bail). Rolling Stop
Departure Time: 7:06
Arrival Time: 7:58
Weather as I call it: Rainy. The liquor store sign said it was 49 degrees.
Paper Guy: Hat, Jacket, No Shades. Right on.
Shady Gas Price: $2.08
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
I was super cautious today. Wet roads and fresh memories of being spun out on a divided highway will do that to you.
In town, the "rolling stop" was in full effect. Usually, one uses the rolling stop when one has the notion that a yield would do just fine instead of a full, wait-three-seconds-after-the-engine-lurch type of stop. A good time to use the rolling stop is when you have full visibility of the intersection you are entering and there is no one else on the roads within a 5 mile radius. It's against the law, but it's a victimless crime.
The rolling stop should not be used when one is attempting to force themselves into a slow crawl of traffic. Anytime one forces their way into traffic, one should realize they will incur the wrath of their fellow commuter. Unfortunately, it was not one...but I encountered many people this morning that thought it was okay to nearly hit me because they wanted to get in front of me.
If one is choosing the path of forcing yourself into traffic, I suggest not using a rolling stop. Instead, come to a complete stop, then wait for three cars to crawl by, and then start to force the car into the traffic line up.
I think one would garner more sympathy that way...and get better results.

Hey, All Hallows' Eve Ev'rybod!
So I got out the door pretty early today. Not sure why, I guess the stars were aligned just right.
Anyhoo...pretty easy drive today. It got a little interesting towards the end when a state police car started to tailgate slow drivers in the left lane on Soldier's Field Road. I wasn't sure what he was trying to prove or communicate, but I think if I saw a cruiser behind me I would get out of his way.

Clocks on a network, like the one on the company's cell phone, are still an hour ahead. There is nothing more jarrring than having conflicting time pieces.
Gas Price is down a cent.
When I got to work today, I was amazed at how many cars there were in the parking garage. Then I thought to myself, these peeps still think it's 8:59 not 7:59...
I'm late.

Exaggeration Is Your Friend
Departure Time: 7:10

Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
In the first segment of my commute (what I like to call the "in town" segment), I have to drive through 6 or 7 traffic lights. Any hesitation can throw off the entire rhythm. I cherish every green light that I do not have to wait for.
This morning, a woman hesitated while stopped at a red light. Typical distraction: she found whatever was fiddling with in her car's back seat to be more important than the road ahead at the moment the light turned green. Because it took her three seconds to situate herself behind the wheel again and accelerate from her stopped position, it caused me to miss the green and consequently the yellow light that she scurried her way through.
Her action caused a chain reaction of events that led me to be stuck at the next 3 red lights. It put 2 minutes on my commute. TWO MINUTES!
(I am exaggerating my feelings about this inconvenience for a humorous effect...is it working?)
P.S. I saw some guy in my rear view mouth the word "*sshole" after someone beeped at him.
Nice.

There's a Wendy's on the Medford line on Highland Ave that has a sign proclaiming "Now Hiring Smiling Cashiers".
That's quite a prerequisite. Plus, do you need to be smiling all the time or just when needed? See, they don't disclose that information on the sign. Probably because the sign isn't that big. I guess one would need to inquire further.
Shady gas price is tumbling down. I am calling for under 2 bucks by Nov. 10th.
Paper guy wasn't at his post when I passed. I was probably too early to catch him.

------------------------------
I had a scheduled vacation day on Monday...so this morning was my first trip back to work after the accident.
I would be lying if I said I was steady as a rock on the roadways today, especially on Soldier's Field Road....but I got through it.
I think leaving a bit earlier helped my anxiety. Less people, more space, better chances of a safe drive.
On a lighter note, I saw a woman flossing her teeth while stopped at a red light. I don't know how I feel about what I saw. Is it gross? Does it go against good driving manners? Does it matter?
I can say this: she can put on her resume that she is a true multi-tasker.

Major Accident
Departure Time: 7:20
Arrival Time: I really don't remember
Weather as I call it: Cloudy, some light rain in spots, wet roads.
Paper Guy: No hat, shades, windbreaker
Shady Gas Price: $2.07
Yelled at other drivers: No
Feared for my life: YEP.
------------------------------
So it finally happened: I got into an accident.
Here's the scene: I was driving west down Soldier's Field road, right by the Harvard Square exit in the right lane. There was a blue Acura SUV who was tailgating me. He got behind me from the BU bridge and didn't let up until we went under N. Harvard St.
Once you get past that bridge, the road opens up to three lanes (my lane is now the middle lane). The blue Acura decides he is going to pass me on the right. As he passes me, he sees an accident in the process of being cleared up. This accident is blocking the right lane so he slams on his brakes. I am in the process of passing him when I am hit from behind. Although I didn't see him, there was a Jeep Liberty behind the Acura. He must have slammed on his brakes to avoid the blue Acura, and swerved into my lane.
The Jeep Liberty bumped me just enough to send my car spinning. I spun around until I was facing oncoming traffic. I am amazed I didn't hit anybody else or get hit again by somebody else.
I put my car in reverse and pulled over to get out of the way.
Everyone was ok. Both cars were drivable after the accident. Papers were exchanged...The state police officer on the scene of the first accident helped me to turn my car around.
Things could have been worse...a lot worse...but I am here...and I am typing about it.
Big wheel keep on turning.
Let's try to be more careful out there.

I hate people who swing to the right to take a left turn. Idiot truck guy had to pull a bold move to get into a Dunkie Donut parking lot...by slightly turning right before taking a hard left. Since he had his blinker on, I was trying to get around him on his right. So, his stutter step freaked me out a bit.
I said, "Whoa there, daddy-o, what are you doing?"
I need to go to AutoZone this afternoon during lunch to get a new brake light.
Mr. Creeps is all right (see comments from yesterday's post).

Thank you Mr. VW Golf for slightly annoying me this morning.

Sometimes you see things on your drive to work that are little captures of time in other people's life. Today I was at a stop light that had a left turn only lane. This lane came equipped with its own green arrow signal, which to me are the best kind of turn only lanes.
I just happened to look to my left as the arrow turned green. There were these guys in this early 90's Mercury Grand Marquis. Young guys, they couldn't have been older than 22. They were fumbling around in the car; looking for something I guess. The driver, who wasn't paying attention, suddenly realized that the light had turned green, exclaimed "Oh sh*t!", and slammed on the gas to get through.
The look of surprise on his face was priceless. You can't pay for moments like that.

It rained a lot last night. I didn't have too much trouble navigating the slippery roads until Soldier's Field Road (SFR) right before the Harvard Sq. exit. All traffic came to a screeching halt.
As I was sitting there momentarily in the stuck traffic, I had this revelation: I can avoid this mess by taking the Harvard Sq. exit, go over the Lars Anderson bridge, and take a left onto Memorial Drive.
As I got into the right lane to take the exit, traffic started to move again. Instead of being a jackass and forcing my way back onto SFR, I took the exit...but instead of taking a right off the ramp...I went straight and took the downramp back on SFR.
There was an accident that had been cleaned up. State police was on the scene with their blue lights on and there were two cars on a flat bed truck all smashed up.
Be careful on those wet roads.

Allright. I had a tough time today.
1. There was some dude who was in a real rush today in my town. He was trying to pass me on a one lane road. When we arrived at a red light, he used the "right turn only" lane to pass me and a white school bus van. I kept my eye on him throughout my trip. For all of his speeding and iratic driving, I was constantly only two cars behind him. All that rushing for not much gain.
2. There were two Middlesex County Sherriff cars in East Cambridge that decided they wanted to be a caravan that could not be separated. I felt like I was close to being sideswiped. It looked like they were transporting somebody. The thing is, if they wanted to be official and break the rules of the road...they should have had their blue lights on....instead of muscling me out of merging into a lane.
3. Some aggressive drivers in pickup trucks on Storrow today. I saw many Ford emblems fixed upon large chrome grills in my rearview. When peeps tailgate, it doesn't make me want to go any faster....it makes me want to slam on my brakes.
You gotta be tough to keep your nerve in this place.
Arrival Time: 7:55
Weather as I call it: Filtered sunshine as they said on the news.
Paper Guy: Winter hat, shades, jacket. Man, I didn't think it was that cold this morning.
Shady Gas Price: $2.13 - Hanging with Mr. Cooper
Yelled at other drivers: No, but I wanted to.
Feared for my life: No

Burnt Peanut Butter
Weather as I call it: Mostly sunny and temps in the 50s
Paper Guy: Sweater. Big smile. Waving to the pick up truck in front of me
Shady Gas Price: $2.13
Yelled at other drivers: Ish
Feared for my life: No
------------------------------
When the light turns green, and the line of cars in front of you makes it through the intersection...don't hestitate. Don't slowly roll towards the line as if you are perambulating down some Vermont back road on some casual leaf peeping expedition.
Instead, trying gunning it.
I (and the guy in front of me) had to get ourselves around a small station wagon so we could make a light at Wellington Circle. We saw the green light was getting stale. We revved up our engines and passed her on the left as she rolled through the intersection. I think the light was still yellow when we passed her (at least that's the story I'm sticking to).
Let's try taking advantage of the opportunity green lights give us. The opportunity to GO!
As an aside, anybody else smell burnt peanut butter in East Cambridge today?
I did.

Our Glass Friend

Weather as I call it: Mostly cloudy.
Paper Guy: Shades were back on...Jacket for cooler temps.
Shady Gas Price: $2.13

We had some rain last night. By morning, the clouds were breaking up and getting pushed off to sea. The sun shown through the slivers; silver sunbeams slicing through. The filtered light, from my vantage point ten miles away made the Hancock Tower seem incandescent.
Our tall glass beacon in Copley Square showing us the way, reflecting back at us.
30 years old and I can't imagine Boston without it.

Cheap Coffee at Dunkin' Donuts
Departure Time: 7:15 (second attempt)
Arrival Time: 8:04
Weather as I call it: Partly sunny...warmer...63 degrees.
Paper Guy: No shades...and he was having trouble with the sun.
Shady Gas Price: $2.13 (I knew this would happen)
Yelled at other drivers: Yeah-ish
Feared for my life: A little bit.
------------------------------
Rough start today. My first departure time was 7:06. After bringing the trash to the curb, I got in the car and took off. I was well on my way to work when I realized I forgot my lunch. I prepared a turkey sandwich with some reduced fat mayo and a slice of Processed American Cheese food on some organic whole wheat bread last night. This sandwich looked so good, I dreamt about it. I was 3 blocks away from my house when it finally dawned on me that I was without my dreamy sandwich.
I was at a crossroads. Do I turn back? Do I continue to work and when lunchtime rolls around I will go and buy some crappy Chicken Frontega SANDWICH??!?
Well, you already know what I did. I am happy with my choice.
Some dude in a box truck had a hard time staying in his lane. He almost ran over me. I had to beep my horn. I feared for my life.
Right before I walked into work...I went to Dunkin' Donuts. Hey, a medium coffee is only $0.49 ($0.51 with tax) at the Dunk today. I waited in the longest line evah to get mine. Normal wait time at DD is about 15 seconds. I was in line for 2 minutes. Sheesh.
Peeps were buying coffees 10 at a time. Crazy Dunkies.

Departure Time: 7:10
Arrival Time: 7:59

The state police presence in Leverett Circle continues to be non-existent. Now, if drivers would realize you can in fact turn right on red without an officer waving you on...we would be rocking in the free world.
I wonder if there was a decision to pull the officers out of the area as of the 1st of October. If you know, let me know.
I can't think of anything that was out of the ordinary today. Volume was about right for a Tuesday. Traffic flowed, Paper Guy sold...Perfect autumn day in Boston.

State Police Directing Traffic in Leverett Circle--No More?
Departure Time: 7:12
Arrival Time: 7:54
Weather as I call it:Mostly Cloudy and 54 degrees

Shady Gas Price: $2.15 but the station down the street has it at $2.13

If experience means anything, I have learned that Mondays tend to be the easiest commute day. I attribute this circumstance to either less people having to work on Mondays...or lots of people get a later start on Mondays. Not sure.
I have decided to compile the gas price/trip duration/weather data for 2006. I will make graphs. It will be awesome.
***News Bulletin*** There were no state police officers directing traffic in Leverett Circle today. Has this era in Boston traffic history come to a close?
I will let you know tomorrow.
